Sustainability Strategy 101

What is sustainability strategy?

In simple terms, the Sustainability strategy is just layering in sustainability as a strategy for success.

What is sustainability strategy all about?

The true meaning of a sustainability strategy lies in how we make sustainability a decision challenge. Rather than focusing on global issues, problems, and pressure. How can we make better decisions by using sustainability as a platform by translating or transforming sustainability into a decision challenge? It allows us to become strategic at an institutional level.

What is sustainability for enterprise value creation?

The goal is to use a sustainability strategy to have increased success. Empowering us to act when working with global systems and improving them where our negative demand on those systems is decreasing. How can I use climate change to make better decisions to increase success and decrease negative demand?

Inadvertently, business depends on natural resources such as water, air, and forests. When these natural resources that serve as an input for business operations become increasingly depleted, it is no more an environmental or a business problem in a silo, but it becomes a systems challenge.

Business vs. Sustainability conversations

The single most significant difference between an enterprise value creation conversation and sustainability for value creation is business conversations usually  trigger a cost conversation about how much it takes to get rid of a problem. But, sustainability triggers an investment conversation as to how much the business should invest in going where they want to go i.e. sustainability is not being in a fire drill and fixing problems but creating success factors using sustainability as a platform to let us invest in actions and activities where we can increase confidence it will take us where we want to go!
